Work Units (Particle/Atom disambiguation) · work-units

D27 ledger ruling, canonical. "RESOLVED: TWO HIERARCHIES exist and were conflated." The same words — Particle, Atom — name different things on the work axis (DWork scheduling) and the matter axis (Atomic Holons forms). [src: HOS-Webdoc/web/src/data/hos-specification.ts:473]

Content

This card resolves the word collision between the two axes that share vocabulary. Deterministic rule: always qualify — say "work particle" (work axis) vs "concept atom" (matter axis). An unqualified "particle"/"atom" is a library defect.

Work axis — the DWork scheduler. The dwork kernel schedules cycles / runs / particles / squads: "the DWork scheduler (cycles / runs / [particles] / squads)". [src: wiki/engines/cognis-and-kernels.md:32] Its quantum is the 31-second work particle: "The 31-second particle 'draft SCO' becomes a row in the Endeavor's data". [src: wiki/engines/cognitive-loop.md:78] A dooit run as work is a 31s particle ("Prepare→Method→Execute→Deliver, 31s particle" [src: HOS-Webdoc/web/src/lib/sapiens3/types.ts:18]). Work particles roll up: particles → loops → runs → cycles, executed by squads. OWNER-2026-07-10: "Create the work particles, schedule theloops, playbooks". [src: wiki/development/prompts-archive/by-topic/knowledge-management-and-concept-modeling.md:579]

Matter axis — the matter-hierarchy. Atomic Holons composes knowledge as matter: "Particle → Atom → Cell → Node → Holon → Dyson" [src: HOS-Webdoc/web/src/lib/atomic-holon/matter-hierarchy.ts:16], with the fuller 9-level Forms ladder per D27: "Unit → Block → Sphere → Particle → Atom → Cell → Node → Component → Entity … Atom=particle+loop (self-sustaining)". [src: HOS-Webdoc/web/src/data/hos-specification.ts:473] Here a particle is a knowledge object in the graph ("Particle — ephemeral signal, generated by Mind. The quantum of work; smallest tracked unit" [src: HOS-Webdoc/web/src/lib/atomic-holon/matter-hierarchy.ts:52]) and a concept atom is a particle bound into a self-sustaining loop.

Where they meet (and why the collision exists). A work particle, once approved, is written back into the graph as matter (the cognitive-loop step 8 write-back: results become holons), and matter-hierarchy code itself calls the particle "the quantum of work" — so both axes legitimately claim the word. The axes remain distinct: the work axis measures effort over time (scheduling, LPz payment, squad approval); the matter axis measures composition of knowledge (dikwc, entropy, physics weights).
